《暴风雨前》的作者李劼人先生是我国著名的文学家、翻译家，一生留有五、六百万字的著作和译作。他的大河小说三部曲《死水微澜》、《暴风雨前》、《大波》已经成为传世之作。李劼人先生被他的同学郭沫若称为“中国的左拉” ，他的三部曲被郭沫若誉为“小说的近代史”。 李先生从1935年起写了三个连续性的长篇《死水微澜》、《暴风雨前》和《大波》（第一部），描写辛亥革命前的社会生活。这三部小说都以作者的故乡四川为背景。
