  • Stephen Sprouse exploded on the fashion scene in early 80s with vibrant Day-Glo creations that captured the free, colourful spirit of the times. During his short career, he showed his work on the runway, did special collections for Barneys and Bergdorfs, and had his own store in Soho. Sprouse also reached out into a variety of other mediums, by designing wardrobes for Blondie, doing advertising campaigns for brands like Absolut and Rock the Vote, and designing bags and prints for Louis Vuitton (many of which are still used by Marc Jacobs for the brand today). Sprouse was a close friend of Warhol's, and is one of two designers ever to have been given the right to reproduce his into prints. This book is the ultimate monograph of this cult fashion legend, following his career from his early days designing wardrobes for his neighbor Debbie Harry in late '70s, to his ascent onto the New York fashion scene in the early 80s, to the opening of his stores in NY and LA in the late '80s, to the relaunch of his label in the '90s, and through to the work he was doing at the time of his death in 2004. The book comprises editorial and advertising images by well-known fashion photographers, runway shots, sketches, artwork and other never-before seen images from Sprouse's personal collection, and interviews from those who knew and work with him. There will also be an introductory essay by Tama Janowitz, one of Sprouse's closest friends. This book coincides with a retrospective at Deitch Projects, and will feature jackets printed in four Day-Glo colors, an homage to Sprouse's iconic cover for Debbie Harry's album, Rockbird.
